HTC Releases Beta Patch To Fix The Vive Cosmos’ Poor Controller Tracking - Forbes

The HTC Vive Cosmos has received a beta update to attempt to fix its wonky tracking.

The Cosmos was intended to be an upgrade from the original HTC Vive and the Vive Pro, while also coming in a slightly lower cost. While it’s more expensive than the Rift S, it’s also cheaper than the Valve Index (Valve was previously a partner with HTC on the original Vive, however this relationship has since ended).

The headset, which launched only a few weeks ago, has been plagued by a variety of issues such as poor battery life in the controllers and, of course, poor tracking. Specifically, the Cosmos appears to struggle in anything less than brightly, uniformly lit playspaces. Annoyingly, the opposite it also true, and the controllers also struggle to be tracked in high-light areas, although this appears to be a much less common problem.

In a tweet at the beginning of this month, HTC confirmed that this was a problem that its engineers were working on, and the first pass at improving tracking has finally been launched in a new beta patch.

In the patch notes, it is claimed that both low- and bright-light tracking has been improved in adjustments to both the head-mounted display (HMD) and the controllers.

The beta patch also improves some other features, such as reducing jitter when using the Vive Wireless Adapter for cable-free PC VR solutions, and improving both near-HMD tracking of the controllers and the prediction algorithms for when the controllers are out of view of the inside-out tracking cameras.

To access the patch, make sure you’re a part of the Beta program through the Vive Console app. Check here on how to do this.

At the moment, response to the patch appears to be mixed. Some users are reporting it doesn’t outright fix the tracking problems, and it certainly doesn’t address concerns about other areas of the Cosmos, such as the controllers’ poor battery lives.

At least this is a beta patch, meaning better fixes could be coming soon. Remember, the Rift S also suffered from poor tracking before Oculus fixed it through firmware patches.
